Ferroalloy Basics - Definition and Classification
Ferroalloy Basics - Definition and Classification
1. Definition and uses of ferroalloys.
Ferroalloys are alloys of iron and one or more metallic or non-metallic elements. Ferroalloy is one of the main raw materials for steelmaking and mechanical casting, and is used as deoxidizer, desulfurizer and alloy additive in steelmaking and casting.
2. Classification of ferroalloys.
There are many varieties of ferroalloys, which are generally classified according to the elements they contain, such as:
(1) Ferrosilicon: industrial ferrosilicon¡ ¡ Ferrosilicon containing 95%, 75%, 45% of silicon
Poor ferrosilicon (containing 12% silicon)
Silicon aluminum alloy
Silicon calcium alloy
(2) Ferromanganese: high carbon ferromanganese (7% carbon content)
Medium carbon ferromanganese (1.0~1.5% carbon content)
Low carbon ferromanganese (0.5% carbon content)
manganese metal
Silicon manganese alloy
(3) Ferrochrome: high carbon ferrochrome (4~8% carbon content)
Medium carbon ferrochromium (0.5~4% carbon content)
Low carbon ferrochromium (0.15~0.50% carbon content)
Micro-carbon ferrochromium (0.06% carbon content)
Ultrafine carbon ferrochromium (with carbon less than 0.03%)
metal chrome
Silicon chromium alloy
(4) Other ferroalloys. In addition to the above types of ferroalloys, there are ferro-tungsten, ferro-molybdenum, ferro-titanium, ferro-vanadium, ferro-phosphorus, ferro-boron, ferro-nickel, ferro-niobium, ferro-zirconium, and rare-earth alloys.
