Uses and properties of ferroalloys

In a broad sense, ferroalloy refers to a product that is added to molten iron as a deoxidizer, element additive, etc. during steelmaking to make the steel have certain characteristics or meet certain requirements. A master alloy composed of iron and one or several elements, mainly used in iron and steel smelting.

In the iron and steel industry, all intermediate alloys used in steelmaking are generally referred to as "ferroalloys" regardless of whether they contain iron or not (such as silicon-calcium alloys).

Ferroalloys are generally used as:

1. Deoxidizer: In the process of steelmaking, it can remove oxygen in molten steel, and some iron alloys can also remove other impurities in steel such as sulfur and nitrogen.

2. Alloy additives: According to the requirements of steel grades, alloying elements are added to the steel to improve the properties of the steel.

3. Inoculant: It is added to molten iron before casting of cast iron to improve the crystallographic structure of the casting.

4. Reducing agent: reducing agent for producing other ferroalloys and non-ferrous metals by metallothermic reduction method;

5. Alloy additives for non-ferrous alloys; also used in small amounts in chemical industry and other industries.

The main element of ferroalloy generally has a high melting point, it is difficult to reduce oxides, and it is difficult to smelt pure metal. Ferroalloys are added in iron and steel smelting, because it is more favorable to melt in molten steel.
