Scheler also did not extract metal from the soft manganese ore, so he turned to his friend and Bergmann's assistant, Gann. In 1774, Gann separated the metallic manganese. Bergman named it mangaese (manganese). Its Latin name manganum and element symbol Mn are derived from this.
